Obama: Gifted Orator?

I don’t think so. The clip below shows him belittling Americans abroad for not speaking the language of the country they’re in while people from all over the world speak English. As is usual with Obama and his elitist comments, he’s out of touch with what Americans really do. Since he didn’t attend public school he wouldn’t know what American students are taught, that 85 percent of America’s 17 million of them are graduating with two or more years of foreign language instruction and a third had three or more years. He himself doesn’t speak either the French or Spanish he deems so important for Americans to know.
Aside from that, I have read ad nauseam reports of how great an orator or gifted speaker he is, I’ve never seen his speech at the Dem convention in ’06 or seen any of his speeches whole, but watching this short clip I’m almost embarrassed for him at how halting and stumbling he is, how incompetent he is at getting out a few simple short sentences, verging on the inarticulate. He has been seriously mis-overestimated. He has neither style nor substance.
As a small point I also find the constant mechanical gesturing of his left hand most annoying.

As a citizen of the United Kingdom, I won’t comment on the USA’s politics, but I hope you’ll allow me to comment on a linguistic matter.

It would be good if Americans were to look more favourably on learning languages other than a form of English.

I would like to argue the case for learning and using Esperanto. This is a planned language which belongs to no one country or group of states. Take a look at http://www.esperanto.net

Esperanto works! I’ve used it in speech and writing in a dozen countries over recent years.
Indeed, the language has some remarkable practical benefits. Personally, I’ve made friends around the world through Esperanto that I would never have been able to communicate with otherwise. And then there’s the Pasporta Servo, which provides free lodging and local information to Esperanto-speaking travellers in over 90 countries.

What do you think about Americans making wider use of Esperanto?

It would be good if Americans were to look more favorably on learning languages other than a form of English.

Why would it be good? This is America where you can travel from one side of the continent to the other without ever having to pull another language out of your hat. Why the hell should we accommodate Mexicans or anyone else, especially since a good percentage of those bellowing about Spanish have no right being in this country anyway. They are called illegals and they have the right to go back home. Period.

I attended a public school and even back in the late fifties and early sixties I was taking French in elementary school. It isn’t as if Americans are discouraged from acquiring more than one language. Any American can learn any language they wish and if the school doesn’t provide it, there are tutors, tapes and the Internet. If a foreigner can’t cope, a foreigner can go home.

What do you think about Americans making wider use of Esperanto?

Well, quite frankly, why should we? Why re-invent the wheel when English seems to do quite well globally as it is.
You were gracious enough not to get political but this is more than an assault on our language. Language is only one issue amongst many that constitute a threat to our sovereignty and our traditions. Maybe Ligneus, my blog partner, has a different take on it since he grew up in England but this here redneck will have none of it.

Hi Zee, No, I agree with you completely, I mean I’m all for learning other languages, it has more benefits than being able to talk to foreigners [that's the English in me talking!] in their own lingo. But typically of Socialists they want to force you to do it because they think it’s a good idea.
I’d already replied to Bill C but forgot to post it, see below.

Main problem is, whatever the benefits, it ain’t gonna happen. In any case I prefer things that evolve rather than those made up whole. However brainy the inventors or developers may be, they can’t replicate or compete with what comes from thousands or even millions using it in everyday life.
It’s a bit like cities, compare the great old cities that grew with the uses of the inhabitants with such as Brasilia. The very first decision was the siting of the city, where the planners thought would be great, except in practice no one wanted to go there.

Obambi should give that speech more often, it’ll really piss people off. From demanding that English be the only language, he waffles on to tag something onto it, which sounds a lot like he’s going to pass a law saying Americans should be bi-lingual.

Incidentally, i’d like to know exactly how many poor people, that these scumbag Democrats have “helped”, have actually gotten together the money to go over to Europe to say merci bu…. whatever jackass.

I don’t know Zee, i just don’t get it, why are people hanging on his every word, all i’m hearing is a condescending arrogant ass.

Appreciate the link MK. It’s amazing. One need go no farther than Chicago to find the dirt on Obama. And yet, his sheep remain oblivious.

I’m not too certain whether it is wise to forecast the future as far as Esperanto is concerned.

Did you know for example that the Polish Parliament, the Sejm, has voted unanimously for Esperanto. This is because Esperanto has become a living language.

With 397 votes in favour, and nil against, the Polish Parliament voted that Esperanto receive the Nobel Peace Prize 2008.

Nine British MP’s have nominated Esperanto for the Nobel Peace Prize as well.

    Road Sassy,

I’m stunned to find people who describe Barack Obama as a “gifted orator,” despite the fact that his oratorical prowess surfaces only when he is using a teleprompter. In a recent post, I highlighted a media interview during which Obama used variations of the word, “Uhh,” a total of 30 times during the interview that lasted two minutes and 47 seconds. That’s almost 10 times per minute!
