Sub-Prime Crisis On a Nutshell: Corrupt Democratic Mortgage Manipulation

Here are the “straight talk” bullet points you need to know about the sub-prime mortgage crisis:

* Starting three decades ago, Democrats have used every parliamentary trick in the book to construct exactly the system we have today, where banks are bullied into making bad loans to borrowers who cannot afford them; then they sell those bad loans to Freddie Mac or Fannie Mae; and when a borrower defaults, taxpayers pick up the bill for the defaulter’s nice, new house. This amounts to housing welfare for Democrats;

* Republicans have tried repeatedly to kill that program, warning that such an anti-capitalist practice can only result in a complete, diastrous collapse;

* Democrats “denounced” those warnings as “exaggerated.” Because of the arcane rules in the House of Representatives and especially in the Senate, Democrats have repeatedly managed to squash those attempts at real reform — whether they were in the majority or the minority;

* Now that the warnings are proved prescient, and the collapse is underway and impossible to conceal any longer, Democrats point their fingers at President Bush, John McCain, and Republicans in general — “Look what you made us do!”

* Democrats pretend that the collapse was caused by a lack of regulation and government control — when it was actually caused by overregulation, amounting to quasi-nationalization of mortgage lenders, vigorously pushed by Democrats in 1977, 1999, 2003, and 2005 — the It’s a Wonderful Life provision;

* Democrats pretend that John McCain was pushing for complete deregulation of Fannie and Freddie, when in fact he was pushing for greater oversight — but favored the rescinding of the particular Democratic provision that has now led to the collapse. Barack Obama and Joe Biden have consistently supported this provision — and now blame McCain when its inevitable, predictable, and predicted consequences come crashing down upon us.

Global Poverty Act: Revenge of the Community Organizers

A better name for Barack Obama’s Global Poverty Act (S.2433, based on H.R. 1302) might be Revenge of the Community Organizers.

The Global Poverty Act requires that the President craft a U.S. foreign policy aimed at reducing global poverty by one-half the number of people worldwide between 1990 and 2015, who live on less than $1 per day.

To do so, it taxes the entire United States economy (our GDP) at a rate of nearly one percent.

The law refers directly to a United Nations declaration called the Millenium Development Goal, which calls “for a ‘redistribution (of) wealth and land,’ cancellation of ‘the debts of developing countries’ and ‘a fair distribution of the earth’s resources.’”

It effects a “tax on the rental value of land and natural resources,” a “royalty on worldwide fossil energy production – oil, natural gas, coal,” “fees for the commercial use of the oceans, fees for airplane use of the skies, fees for use of the electromagnetic spectrum, fees on foreign exchange transactions, and a tax on the carbon content of fuels.”

What it translates to is the surrender of U.S. sovereignty to the U.N., an organization generally quite hostile to our interests.

It seems a tad ironic that Obama would levy such an astoundingly high tax on Americans when CNN reports that his own brother lives on a dollar a day in a Kenyan slum.

Obama’s Immigration Bill Includes Funding For Leftist Groups to Organize Immigrant Communities

Marinka Peschmann reported at Canada Free Press on Barack Obama’s immigration bill that will soon come up for a vote in the US Senate.

Obama put his community organizing skills to work on this one. He must have learned a few things from all of those years working with Bill Ayers. The bill would give millions to (Leftist) groups to organize immigrants politically.

Peschmann reported:

The Citizenship Promotion Act, S. 795’s, primary goal is “to assist aliens who have been lawfully admitted to becoming citizens of the United States.” It does not provide funding to secure the borders or assist in the USCIS’s quest towards efficiency or its capabilities to root out corruption. Instead, Obama’s bill will organize the immigrant community by allotting U.S. $80 million for outreach programs targeted at immigrants and future voters.

In Section 6 of Obama’s bill, costing U.S. $80 million, the Secretary of Homeland Security would “award grants,” to “not for profit organizations” with “experience working with immigrant communities” to “carry out outreach activities,” including teaching English, providing education and citizenship classes, plus provide legal assistance” to applicable aliens towards citizenship and the right to vote. Typically, studies show that immigrant voters vote Democrat.

If passed into law, organizations seeking Obama’s grant eligibility must show, how they plan “to leverage available private and State and local government resources;” their experience “in carrying out the activities, including the number of aliens and geographic regions served; and, …[how] to employ best practices developed by adult educators, State and local governments, and community organizations.” The Secretary of Homeland Security would also “develop outreach materials” such as “public service announcements; advertisements…other media…” to “encourage” applicable aliens to become U.S. citizens.

The Secretary of Homeland Security serves at the pleasure of the President; if elected that would be Obama.

Kill the bailout: More ACORN funding?!

Just heard from several readers that Lindsay Grahamnesty told Fox that the Mother of All Bailouts includes a reported $100 million more in funding for the left-wing housing entitlement thugs and heavily tax-subsidized fraudsters at ACORN. Under the original bailout proposal, apparently, a large portion of any repayment of the $700 billion would go to Barack Obama’s good friends at ACORN with a smaller allocation to debt repayment. Readers heard him say it was 20 percent.

Meanwhile, the watchdog Consumer Rights League testified on the Hill this week about rampant ACORN fraud:

James Terry, Chief Public Advocate for the Consumers Rights League, today testified at a joint House Administration and House Judiciary Committee oversight hearing on “Federal, State and Local Efforts to Prepare for the General 2008 Election,” where he highlighted “corruption at every level of ACORN including embezzlement, cover-ups, misuse of taxpayer funds and voter fraud.” An excerpt of his testimony follows:

Behind the Mortgage Meltdown

Here is another way the Latino immigrants take the housing market down. One immigrant buys a single-family property, for which the payments are way beyond what is affordable. Then several other families move in with them and help to make the mortgage payments. (This is against zoning regulations, but these are not enforced by politically correct public officials pandering for the immigrant vote.) One family lives in the dining room, another in the living room, and each of the bedrooms becomes home to an entire family.

Once this happens to several homes on a street, the resulting mess and litter begin to depress property values. Maintenance is neglected and the immigrants’ homes become shabby. So the legitimate homeowners are the first to suffer, as their neighborhood begins to look like a third world country and housing values decline.

That Barack Hussein Obama should participate with this nation’s leaders on this economic meltdown is as much of a sham as his accusations that Republicans and capitalism have brought America to the precipice upon which we now totter. It’s rather like inviting  a diseased whore to advise on the necessity of virtue and morality. Yet, there they sit, Barack Obama and his pimps, advising on a crisis that their political agenda and ideology has brought to poisonous fruition.

But perhaps the public doesn’t understand — as I didn’t until this month — just how much of that collapse was in fact orchestrated by the socialist hijinks of congressional Democrats (including Obama), by Bill Clinton, and by Jimmy Carter: Between them, they forced banks and S&Ls into the volatile and risky sub-prime market; and then the Democrats repeatedly prevented any attempt by congressional Republicans (and by President Bush) to oversee and regulate that market.

Why would they do this? First, because Democrats have long been getting huge campaign donations from banks and other mortgage lenders; in fact, the top two recipients of such money are Sens. Chris Dodd (D-CT, 95%) and Barack Obama. Both subsequently encouraged exactly the sort of loan speculation they now decry, an act that reeks of corruption. In addition, many former members of the Clinton administration, including Franklin Delano Raines, former Commerce Secretary William Daley, and Deputy Attorney General Jamie Gorelick (of “Gorelick’s wall” infamy), ended up running Fannie and Freddie or lobbying for them… and incidentally raking off tens of millions of dollars for themselves.

But the real culprit in this collapse isn’t just Democratic corruption; it’s the leftist demand to increase minority home ownership by lending low-income borrowers more money than they qualify to borrow, with higher mortgage payments than they are able to pay. That is, offering mortgages that violate the most basic rules of banking, as a form of “housing welfare.” That is the crux of this very real, but very specific crisis.

Obama and his media pals mislead on Wall Street turmoil

…in 2005, McCain was pushing the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act to rein in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and require more stringent regulation by the Department of Housing and Urban Development, by which time Barack Obama — who did nothing — was on his way to becoming a top recipient of of donations from Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and Wall Street firms enmeshed in the sub-prime mortgage mess. (Indeed, the biggest chunk of industry donations to Camp Obama comes from the Finance, Insurance & Real Estate (FIRE) sector — just edging out Lawyers & Lobbyists.) So McCain did not suddenly embrace this issue; if anyone has, it is Obama, who is grasping for an issue to regain the lead in the public opinion polls with less than 50 days until the election.

‘Crony’ Capitalism Is Root Cause Of Fannie And Freddie Troubles

Meanwhile, Fannie and Freddie also became a kind of jobs program for out-of-work Democrats.

Franklin Raines and Jim Johnson, the CEOs under whom the worst excesses took place in the late 1990s to mid-2000s, were both high-placed Democratic operatives and advisers to presidential candidate Barack Obama.

Clinton administration official Jamie Gorelick also got taken care of by the Fannie-Freddie circle. So did top Clinton aide Rahm Emanuel, among others.

The Trillion-Dollar Bank Shakedown That Bodes Ill for Cities

The Clinton administration has turned the Community Reinvestment Act, a once-obscure and lightly enforced banking regulation law, into one of the most powerful mandates shaping American cities—and, as Senate Banking Committee chairman Phil Gramm memorably put it, a vast extortion scheme against the nation’s banks. Under its provisions, U.S. banks have committed nearly $1 trillion for inner-city and low-income mortgages and real estate development projects, most of it funneled through a nationwide network of left-wing community groups, intent, in some cases, on teaching their low-income clients that the financial system is their enemy and, implicitly, that government, rather than their own striving, is the key to their well-being.

The CRA’s premise sounds unassailable: helping the poor buy and keep homes will stabilize and rebuild city neighborhoods. As enforced today, though, the law portends just the opposite, threatening to undermine the efforts of the upwardly mobile poor by saddling them with neighbors more than usually likely to depress property values by not maintaining their homes adequately or by losing them to foreclosure. The CRA’s logic also helps to ensure that inner-city neighborhoods stay poor by discouraging the kinds of investment that might make them better off.

America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, every corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen.

Last Friday, I laid out my proposal and I have since discussed my priorities and concerns with the bill the Administration has put forward. Senator Obama has expressed his priorities and concerns. This morning, I met with a group of economic advisers to talk about the proposal on the table and the steps that we should take going forward. I have also spoken with members of Congress to hear their perspective.

It has become clear that no consensus has developed to support the Administration’s proposal. I do not believe that the plan on the table will pass as it currently stands, and we are running out of time.

Tomorrow morning, I will suspend my campaign and return to Washington after speaking at the Clinton Global Initiative. I have spoken to Senator Obama and informed him of my decision and have asked him to join me.

I am calling on the President to convene a meeting with the leadership from both houses of Congress, including Senator Obama and myself. It is time for both parties to come together to solve this problem.

We must meet as Americans, not as Democrats or Republicans, and we must meet until this crisis is resolved. I am directing my campaign to work with the Obama campaign and the commission on presidential debates to delay Friday night’s debate until we have taken action to address this crisis.

I am confident that before the markets open on Monday we can achieve consensus on legislation that will stabilize our financial markets, protect taxpayers and homeowners, and earn the confidence of the American people. All we must do to achieve this is temporarily set politics aside, and I am committed to doing so.

Following September 11th, our national leaders came together at a time of crisis. We must show that kind of patriotism now. Americans across our country lament the fact that partisan divisions in Washington have prevented us from addressing our national challenges. My biological mother was seven-and-a-half months pregnant when she decided to abort me. I don’t know why she made that decision. It was 1977. She and my biological father were 17 at the time and weren’t married.

She went to a clinic in Los Angeles and had a saline abortion. A salt solution is injected into the mother’s womb, which the baby gulps. The solution also burns the baby inside and out. The idea was that within 24 hours she would deliver a dead baby. But, by the grace of God, I survived.

The abortionist wasn’t on duty when I came into the world. Had he been there, he would have ended my life with strangulation, suffocation or leaving me there to die, which was considered perfectly legal up until 5 August 2002 in the United States. Now, a child who has survived an abortion must receive proper medical care. The abortionist had to sign my birth certificate. He had to acknowledge a life that just hours before he was trying to end.

The only person even remotely concerned about my well-being was the nurse. She called an ambulance and had me transferred to a hospital. I was placed in an incubator weighing two pounds. They didn’t expect me to live.

After several months they decided that I had a tremendous will to live. I was placed in the foster care system and at 17 months was diagnosed with cerebral palsy due to lack of oxygen while I was being burnt alive for 18 hours in my mother’s womb. I was 32lbs, couldn’t move and they said that I would just be a vegetable for the rest of my life.

My foster mother, Penny, decided that despite what the doctors were saying, she would work with me. She did my physical therapy three times a day and I began to hold up my head, sit up and crawl. Eventually, at the age of three-and-a-half, I was able to walk with a walker and leg braces. That was the age at which Penny’s daughter, Diana, who was then in her thirties, adopted me.

I’m 28 now and work as a musician in Nashville, Tennessee. I still walk with a limp and fall occasionally. But I’ve just completed my first marathon and will be running the London Marathon next April to raise funds for children with cerebral palsy. I’ll be running on behalf of Stars Organization Supporting Cerebral Palsy.

Obama moves to Los Angeles, and attends Occidental College, [28] where he plays basketball and continues taking drugs. He becomes friends with Pakistani Muslims Mohammed Hasan Chandio, and Wahid Hamid, [20] and Indian Vinai Thummalapally. [189] At Occidental College, Obama indulges in alcohol, marijuana, and cocaine. [188] He becomes involved in the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa. Obama is disappointed in a grade he receives from political science Professor Roger Boesche, and complains he is being graded “on a different curve” because of his race. [20]

In 1981, Obama visits his mother and half-sister in Indonesia, then continues on for three weeks to Karachi, Pakistan and Hyderabad, India, [26,194,195,196] with his friends Chandio [23] and Hamid. [25] One of Obama’s hosts in Pakistan is Muhammadian Mian Soomro [24], Obama’s senior by 11 years, son of a Pakistani politician and himself a politician, who later becomes interim President of Pakistan when Pervez Musharraf resigns in August of 2008. Soomro states that “someone” personally requested that he “watch over” Barack Obama, but Soomro will not name that individual – who today allegedly lives in South America. [24]

(Note that a trip to Pakistan in 1981 was not possible for Americans, except for those who were on official government business, because it was on the list of nations banned by the State Department for U.S. travelers. It is possible that Obama was able to enter Pakistan with an Indonesian passport, if he retained his Indonesian citizenship. Pakistan, being almost 100 per cent Muslim, would have welcomed foreign Muslim visitors.)

Barack Obama needs to be called out on Freddie Mae and Fannie Mac. In the clip above, his lying tongue stutters pronouncing their names. America will be stuttering all the way to the third world poor house if this Soros puppet is installed as president.

I don’t have much time to devote to blogging these days so I can only send you to those who are doing a mighty fine job of telling you what the Obama’s media whores will not.

Obama Knee-Deep in Financial Crisis

It’s important to go to http://opensecrets.org in order to do some serious research on Obama’s fundraising, including this year and his 2004 Senate race. Obama, after Chris Dodd, was the biggest recipient of donations from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and his economic adviser, Franklin Raines, was a major architect of the financial disaster. So, too, was Jim Johnson, who (briefly) headed Obama’s V-P search team. McCain is exploiting this.

But a key point to bring out how many millions (tens of millions?) Obama has received from financial firms, not only Fannie and Freddie, but also Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, and many, many other firms whose hands are dirty in the recent financial events. Goldman Sachs has treated Obama like the world’s most expensive mistress.

Bloggers and other onliners: We need to concentrate on issues that will ring a bell with the American people and avoid ones that mainly academic exercises. The fact that Obama has received millions from people who caused the economic crisis will resonate.

What is especially enraging for me is that Soros and his boy Obama may damn well succeed in pulling this country down. I have been writing about Soros for a long time and I am relieved to see others recognizing his nefarious machinations in this election. To sum up, Soros is a smart, ruthless ideologue who will stop at nothing to advance the secular-progressive offensive. He has no scruples, ethics, or sense of fair play. The guy reminds me of Colonel Banastre “Butcher” Tarleton, the most justly hated Redcoat during the Revolutionary War. Soros and Tarleton can both be associated with take-no-prisoner policies: In both cases, their prey, whether traditionalists today or colonial rebel fighters in the eighteenth century, were simply people trying to strengthen their country.

I mean it. for traditional-minded Americans, George Soros is public enemy number one. Without his unlimited cash (along with that of Peter Lewis), the S-P movement could not attack so readily and so effectively – and with such venom. Soros envisions a libertine society that soaks the rich (except for him) and forms no judgments on personal behavior. His one-world philosophy would obliterate the uniqueness of America and downsize its superpower status. His secular approach would drastically diminish Judeo-Christian philosophy in America and encourage his own spiritual philosophy: atheism. George Soros is truly an imposing force, and his elite media allies are making him even more so. We ignore him at our peril.

We may not know much about Paulson, but we know a lot about Soros.

Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama favor government support for people losing their homes because they can’t repay their subprime mortgages. But what about the financial wheeler-dealers in the hedge fund industry who may stand to make billions of dollars from this terrible debacle? Foremost among them is billionaire hedge fund operator George Soros, who has committed his life and immense financial resources to bringing the Democrats to power in the White House.

Ties to the controversial and mysterious hedge fund industry could become a major problem for the Democratic Party. Hedge fund money “appears to be tilting toward the Democrats of late,” the New York Times reported last year.

OBAMA IS OWNED BY GEORGE SOROS

Barack Obama is a wholly-owned subsidiary of madman financier George Soros, the shadowy multi-billionaire who is credited with destroying the entire economy of Britain a few years ago while making a fortune betting against the British currency. For his trouble, he was convicted of insider trading, stock manipulation, and trading fraud. Sound familiar?

Now Soros, along with a conspiracy of Asian and European currency traders, is betting against the dollar. He hopes to bring down the economy of the United States and control the White House, all within the next eight weeks. Already there is talk in international financial circles of lowering the credit rating of the United States from AAA, for the first time in history. That would skyrocket our cost of borrowing. Soros is quoted as having said, “The main obstacle to a stable and just world order is the United States. . . . We must puncture the bubble of American supremacy.”

But first he must get Obama elected at all costs. And to that end he has managed to enlist many of the nation’s union bosses to commit more than $1 billion to the election. Soros plans a one-two punch against our economy, the first in New York in October (did we already see it?) the other in Hollywood just before the election in November.

Before you get hyperventilated with excitement at such a prospect, read this comment from The Guardian in UK.

OK Muddybanks. There aren’t words of no syllables, so you’re going to have to make do with words of one and more:

The NHS IT programme is a complete, utter fucking mess. It doesn’t work and it never will work. It will eventually be scrapped, and if Labour were still in power it would promptly be replaced by something even more useless and expensive.

It will end up costing the taxpayer twenty billion pounds. Do you understand what twenty billion pounds are? Let me help you:

On the day that Queen Victoria died, I put half a million pounds in used fivers in a suitcase, took it out into the woods, and burnt it in a bonfire. There wasn’t any good reason for doing this – in much the same way as there isn’t any good reason for much of Liebour’s ‘public spending’ – but I did it anyway.

Then I did the same thing the next day. And the next. And the next. Every day of every week of every month of every year since the day that Queen Victoria died I have been burning half a million pounds in used fivers in a suitcase in a bonfire in the woods.

And I’m still not at twenty billion. I’ve still got nearly two years to go.

That’s the sum of taxpayers’ money that Liebour have spunked down the drain on one single foul-up in one single Department. If you’re genuinely stupid enough to want them to carry on, then use your own money. Give them all of it. Tell them they can spend it on whatever they like.

They’ll be delighted.

Now figure out how long it would take to burn the Fanny Mae bail out at that rate.

The Financial Mess.

I, along with most I suspect, am not qualified to write on the current financial crisis but you could stick a metaphorical pin anywhere in the blogosphere and come up with something on it. One of the best sites I’ve found for information, analysis and links is The Right Coast.

Even more of a must read is Investor’s Business Daily.

Well, those critics may be right — it is a crisis of capitalism. A crisis of politically driven crony capitalism, to be precise.

Indeed, Democrats have so effectively mastered crony capitalism as a governing strategy that they’ve convinced many in the media and the public that they had nothing whatsoever to do with our current financial woes.

Barack Obama has repeatedly blasted “Bush-McCain” economic policies as the cause, as if the two were joined at the hip.

Funny, because over the past 8 years, those who tried to fix Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac — the trigger for today’s widespread global financial meltdown — were stymied repeatedly by congressional Democrats.

This wasn’t an accident. Though some key Republicans deserve blame as well, it was a concerted Democratic effort that made reform of Fannie and Freddie impossible.

The reason for this is simple: Fannie and Freddie became massive providers both of reliable votes among grateful low-income homeowners, and of massive giving to the Democratic Party by grateful investment bankers, both at the two government-sponsored enterprises and on Wall Street.

Try to tell Dem voters that and see how far you get. I hope someone tells John McCain and his campaign and they can get some ads out real fast.

Hmmm…..

This is kinda worrying. John Podhoretz on what he says is John McCain’s worst week since he began campaigning. That he had a perfectly good argument on the financial crisis in that he

saw the problems with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and called them out in 2005 while others were still angling for their largesse, and that therefore he possesses the experience and demonstrated the kind of leadership and insight that are required for the presidency — he instead flailed about.

He concludes with:

The first presidential debate takes place on Friday night. It’s supposed to be about foreign policy, but it’s likely that at least a third of it will deal with the financial crisis. If McCain doesn’t get his head on straight and start talking like a serious-minded person with a sophisticated sense of the stakes, he will blow the debate and lose the election. Just like that.

Well let’s hope he does ‘get his head together’ for Friday.

OTOH, by the time I finished the comments, I felt somewhat better about it, according to some, Podhoretz is a bit of a pessimist.

We’ll find out on Friday, won’t we?

Georgia Update.

Sometime back I got into a dispute here with one Akira on the wisdom or lack thereof of Putin in invading Georgia. Well chickens are coming home for old Vladimir. His main excuse was to free Ossettia from the despotic control of Georgia, though of course his somewhat understandable reasons from his point of view were to claw back control over the region himself and in so doing have access to the Black Sea and gain control of the oil supply route to Eutopia. [I hope I have that right, it's late and I don't have time to search out info] Now Ossettia is proclaiming itself a Republic, in other words an independent nation which includes of course independence from Mother Russia’s clutches. So Puty’s hoist on his own petard, dug himself a hole, he’s the biter bit and all those picturesque things.

Moscow, it appears, has backed itself into a corner. It has just fought a war for self-determination and recognized the independence of South Ossetia. What could the Kremlin possibly say when Kokoity asks for a statehood referendum of all Ossetians?

If the people in both parts of Ossetia want to join together, then perhaps we should support them. After all, President Bush’s “freedom agenda” surely is big enough to include the right to be governed by one’s own kind.

What Makes Obama Tick.

It’s been a while since I did a “must read”. The one I have today is one of those pieces that restates what we all on the right understand while being beyond the comprehension of the oh so intelligent left.

The piece in question is ‘Fully Invested in Your Misery’ by Bruce Walker at American Thinker, a site that should be on everyone’s daily read.

Americans ought to ponder that before electing a man who thrives politically — the sphere of his life that really matter to him — on the unhappiness, helplessness, and hopelessness of his fellow citizens. When his voice promises “hope,” as it so often does, we should recall that what he is promising is communal “hope.” Our experiences, our lives, our souls, to Obama, belong to society. We cannot have hope by ourselves. We can only have hope as part of a vast mass of humanity.

The “change” he promises is also collective change, enforced by the rod of government. Hope and change, in a free world, are the private possessions of motivated individuals. Political leaders bring benefits like honest government, national security, sensible and moderate programs to accomplish the broad purposes of the Constitution, and blind justice. But in a free world, in a free country, politicians do not complete our personal dreams or our private hopes.

It takes much to separate Americans from ownership of their lives. The means of rendering people from their lives is misery. Let the mortgage giants collapse. Let refineries and oil exploration stop. Let food prices spike. Let individual lives drown in worries and in troubles created by the state. Then make those individuals turn to the state for release from pain. Long ago, the formula was written: “The worse, the better.”

Existence ordered by free hearts and minds is chaos to the Left. We cannot find happiness in our own, unorganized and unregulated pursuits. We cannot have meaningful lives separate from the dogma of the Party and, as Obama put in it the closed doors of San Francisco elites, “clinging to our religion.”

Good luck getting any lefty to see the wisdom in that.

Rex Murphy is a Newfoundlander with a wicked vocabulary, an independent streak and a lot of ‘larnin’ to draw on to liven up his texts and also give them depth. In his column today in The Globe and Mail, The Incredible Shrinking Obama, he deconstructs the hype that is the Obama candidacy.

Journalists used to tell stories, now they plumb narratives. Narrative is a pretentious borrowing from the abstraction-clotted world of academic criticism, where texts are interrogated, authors are dead and high-toned fatuousness is king. I’ll see your postmodern and raise you a meta.

Mr. Obama, however, has a kind of welcoming emptiness. Eager acolyte or stern observer, both find it difficult not to add, or project, the most flattering, even jubilant, fill-ins. The Obama candidacy, in its rocket-blast phase when he outsoared Hillary Clinton, drained the dictionaries of every superlative. The great “O” had them swooning in the stands. Why?

True, Oprah had passed her potent wand over him, but even the afternoon regent of a thousand therapies has stays on her sorcery. Mainly, his was very much a candidacy constructed by those who were drawn to him. If there was any meaning to that fortune-cookie poeticism that “we are the ones we have been waiting for,” it was that his campaign was a feedback loop. People saw what they came to see. Mr. Obama was the slate; the crowds brought their own chalk.

I used to read Normblog every day but now it’s once a week. It’s come to seem to me too ‘plodding’, or is my ADD getting worse! I usually catch his blogger profiles on Fridays, I intended at one time to do a little critique of each one but you know what they say about good intentions. Anyway this week’s is Harry Barnes, a retired Labour MP who blogs at Three Score Years and Ten. Not one of his best, in fact what struck me about his answers was the earnestness of the exercise, no creativity and no sense of fun. Just about sums up the left generally, as is shown by all the feminist jokes poking fun at their lack of humour.

‘Knock, knock’.
‘Who’s there?’
‘That’s not funny’.

Here are a couple of questions and replies:

What philosophical thesis do you think it most important to disseminate? > ‘No man is an island.’ When this was first used by John Donne (1572-1631) he was dealing with mankind which to him included women.
What is your favourite piece of political wisdom? > ‘Democratic Socialism… is based on the conviction that free men can use free institutions to solve the social and economic problems of the day, if they are given a chance to do so.’ From Nye Bevan’s In Place Of Fear. His terminology was also meant to cover women.

Disegarding his positing ‘free men and free institutions’ as the solution to society’s problems, because well we know what an Orwellian construct that is given Socialism’s penchant for controlling everything in sight or not in sight too really. How can someone live through the last 72 years and still believe that crap?
But what do you make of him twice thinking it necessary for our edification to point out that women are included? Again, where has he been living the last fifty years? Earnest, well meaning and ponderous, I met them in England, they mostly went by the name of shop stewards.

We use words that are so familiar when they denote something like the shop floor official of a union, that we don’t think it unusual for someone doing that ‘work’ to be called a steward. One of the definitions of steward is :

A person employed to manage another’s property.

When applied to an official of a trade union, it has a chilling ring to it.
