I’m not a big fan of……..
…..automobiles, I’d nearly go as far as to say I don’t like them very much, I mean as objects, they are very useful and I wouldn’t want to be without one but I don’t like them in the way I like plants and trees, things made of silver, musical instruments, non quartz watches, fine books, Tang Dynasty horses….
But here is one , a Bugatti 57S, discovered after fifty years sittine in a garage in England that is as fine looking as a Stradivarius violin or a piece of furniture by Chippendale. Take a look at it and then think Hummer, it will demonstrate how ugly most cars are. I want one!
What do you think Zee? Can you imagine tooling around Cincinnati it it?

LOL, my dear Ligneus, the automobile and the open road constitute mypoetry, my opera. In fact, one of my half- written posts lament the decline of the automobile. To me the American automobile captures the essence of our freedom; the choice to “hit the road” and start life anew somewhere else. The ability to flee the city, to pursue a personal odyssey, to put your past in a rear view mirror. They are testament to our ingenuity and spirit. And as fine as a Bugatti may have been, I will always love the old beat-up trucks depicted by RoadSassy’s icon.
As far as tooling around Cinci in it – to tell you the truth, I’d prefer tooling around in a big old Hummer just to piss off all of the green weenies. But I am so glad you posted it. I love the era, love the legend.
I think my European roots are showing, not to mention my age, when I was a kid cars looked like this. Then there were I guess dozens of car makers, each producing distinctive models and each having its own character. Not that any of them could could compete with the comfort and reliability of what we have now, but boy, they all start to look the same don’t they.
